Setting Your Browser to Download Soundfiles

I have to admit I had a tough time getting Netscape to download soundfiles correctly. I didn't have any trouble with Microsoft Internet Explorer for some reason, but the procedure is basically the same for both. You need to already have one of the MP3 players like QuickTime or SoundApp installed on your hard drive.

First, launch your browser ( you don't have to be on-line) then open its Preferences file by pulling down the 'Edit' menu at the top of your screen and draging to 'Preferences'. Once the 'Preferences' file is open, look for the part where you tell the browser which applications to use as 'helpers' to open mp3 files. In MSIE you'll find this under 'Receiving Files/File Helpers'. In Netscape or Communicator you'll find it under 'Navigator/Applications'.

Now you need to go through the procedure to tell the browser how to recognize mp3s. Once this section is open you should see a long list of file types and the applications which will open them, as well as buttons which say 'New' or 'Add' and 'Edit' and 'Delete'. Click on 'New' or 'Add'. Now answer all the questions in the dialog box. The 'description' should read 'mp3 files' or some such (doesn't have to be exact). The 'MIME type' should read 'audio/mpeg'. The 'Extensions' should read '.mp3 .MP3' with a space between them, just like I've shown it here. Under 'Application' click on 'Browse' or 'Choose', and navigate in the resulting dialog box till you can click on your already-installed MP3 player. For 'file type', select 'mpeg'. Last item: tell Netscape where to store the soundfile after it's downloaded. There should be a button right there to do it. If your browser won't allow you to select the desktop, then create a new folder on the desktop labelled 'Netscape Downloads' or something, and choose that. Of course, you could choose any folder you want, anywhere on your hard drive. Then close the Preferences file by clicking OK. You should now be ready to download MP3 files! If it still doesn't work, try creating an additional entry in the same part of the Preferences file. Leave your first entry in there, and for the second one use 'audio/mp3' as the MIME type and choose 'mp3!' as the file type. All the other stuff should be the same as your first entry.

Make sure you tell Navigator where to put the fresh, newly downloaded soundfile. Navigator definitely needs to be told.

If you still have trouble, check with the tech support at your ISP. - DR
