Company"; "Number Two Top Seam";
"Strange Affair"; "Heather Down
on the Moor"; "Joe Peel"; "Le

True
Dare or Promise
1987 #0005
| First released
in 1987 by Topic Records this album represented
a "first" in many senses: it was the
first collaboration between Martin Simpson and
his new wife Jessica and contains two of her original
songs, "Young Man" and "Wholly
in my Keeping". It also marked the first
time Martin and Jessica worked with Irish singer
Mary McLaughlin, later a member of the "Band
of Angels" and now a solo artist with Windham
Hill and Narada. This CD contains 2 bonus cuts
not found on the original album, John B. Spencer's
"Bluebird" and the traditional "Black
is the Colour". Other tracks include "Doney
Girl", "Not the Whiskey Talking",
"Bedlam Boys" and "Past Caring". |

Sad or High Kicking
1985 #0003
|
This recording was first
released by Topic in 1985. Martin describes this
and "Grinning in Your Face"as 'seminal',
calling them his 'journeyman masterpieces' because
they cover such a wide range of material, with solo
performances and full band arrangements.
Tracks include "Jazzman",
"Shawnee Town", "Moth", "Living
Without You", "For Jessica, Sad or High
Kicking/My Dearest Dear", "Icarus",
"No Depression in Heaven", "Let It
Be Me", "Stillness in Company", and
a rocking version of "Lakes of Ponchartrain".

Gambler", "This War May Last You for Years",

Special Agent
1995
#018
| This is a digitally
remastered reissue from Fledg'ling Records of tracks
recorded in England in 1981. As Alan Murray says in
his 1995 liner notes, "Sometimes re-releases
of early CDs are embarrassing - but not this one...a
rawer sound and a bit of youthful swagger is nothing
to be ashamed of. This is a young Simpson - still
the boy wonder of the UK guitar scene, having a blast
with a few friends. This is not an 'emergent talent'
- it's well and truly emerged, and it sounds like
he's having a ball. Fellow guitarists can simply listen
and despair." With, among others, Dave Bristow,
piano; Jonathan Davie, bass; Ric Saunders,
violin;; and Michael Gregory, percussion. |
