This Gourd Records release, named by Guitar Player .magazine as one of the ten-best albums of 1994, is a collaboration between Martin Simpson and the producer Joe Weed, and contains stirring and provocative arrangements of 19 gospel tunes from both the black and white American gospel traditions.

With Randy Masters, trumpet, Doug Burns, harmonica, Joe Weed, fiddle and mandolin, and Paul Hostetter, guitar and banjo. Songs include: "Palms of Victory"; "Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down"; "Wonderous Love"; "Wayfaring Stranger"; "In the Wilderness"; "What Are They Doing in Heaven Today?"; and "To Be a Pilgrim". Parts of two cuts were used in Ken Burns' 1999 PBS documentary about Susan B. Anthony and the women's suffrage movement.
